| Middleone | January 10, 2012 @ 7:11pm | I saw that eppy and I was not offended by it personally. And just because one is not a Southerner does mean they cannot use or do not use such phrases. At this point there are no other AA females in a role of authority on the show and I think it's totally unrealistic for folks to think that they only need to say courtesy phrases to folks who are only of their ethnicity or race. If one's employer was a white woman or man you would refer to them by his or her first name because they are white? One is only inferior when they are allow themselves to be. I think Harmony is just trying to find her place right now and that's doing what she thinks will keep her job since she is working two of the
! I just think some things are blown out of proportion. For me this is one of those things. What is offensive though is the extreme display of that character being portrayed by Diana Degarmo now those grossly stereotypical things they have going on with that is like whoa. |

because it wouldnt' be warranted,to have the discussion
at all. As there is NOTHING wrong with an employee show-
ing respect for her employer. Miss Newman would've been
fine and appropriate,unless Phyllis instructed her to
say "just call me Phyllis".
The problem,however,comes in when an AA woman calls
a W woman Miss So and So. That,imo.is reminiscent of
slavery. And NOT cool! As for the southern,
aspect,Yoharmony isn't southern. She's from Baltimore.
So,why would SHE,use a common,SOUTHERN,reference?
Doesn't make sense. (Heavy sigh) |

But I think this is Harmony's first time in a job setting like this and for her it is probably intimidating and she wants to try and do and say everything just right and I am from the south! So it is not unusual to hear the term Miss or Mr. In front of someone's name usually with children. But for us it a term of respect to adults or those in leadership positions. Speaking professionally I do not refer to my boss by her first name but refer her as Ms. Myles. I do not know many people who just say hey Joey what's next on the agenda? (unless they are cool with that) There is a certain level of respect you give those people now if she had said that and then proceeded to wash her shoes or pick up Summer and have her call her mammy then I would be yelling! But I think the choice of words was to emphasize how out of place she feels and is compared to the usual type of folks who work there in comparison to where Harmony comes from
And the environment she is used to. IMHO this is no different than a
Hard headed, uneducated, illiterate, unrefined Drucilla when her character was introduced on YnR years ago. She transformed as will Harmony.
And if Harmony would have referred to Phyllis by her last name. Ms. Newman or Summers ( whichever she goes by) would we be having this conversation? |

was okay with it,regarding Yoharmony/DM and the "Miss
Phyllis" controversy,what I meant was that I was okay with
people being upset and expressing their outrage/indigna-
tion at the writers or whoever wrote that line.
NOT that I'm okay with the line. Because I'm NOT!
And it's not a small thing,either,imo. Because it speaks
to a blatant show of disrespect(presumably,on the writers
and MAB's part)for a significant part of Y&R's view-
ership. JMO,but I know that others feel the same.

| Middleone | January 9, 2012 @ 10:00am | I guess I look at Harmony very differently. I think we have to keep in mind where she is coming from. She has been a enslaved if you will to other people her whole life. She got caught up with Tucker hanging with groupies to fit in and clearly he thought no more of her than the tissue he wiped his butt with. But she went from that to being enslaved to drugs and I am sure her dealer and the other folks in her circle who knew they could use her to get whatever in exchange for drugs. She Got caught up with whoever Ana's dad is, that didnt work out and now she is under Katherine's thumb. I think they are just showing how damaged she is. Her being clean doesn't mean she has renewed her mind, that mentailty carries over in to every aspect of life. I think when they(and THEY BETTER) transform her it will be very noticable that she is changing and come into herself and not bow down to everything and everyone like she has before. Debbi said she has nothing to do with writers she just has to trust they will get it right. So I think she is pretty much sticking to script. With her being fairly new I do not know if she has as much leeway with that as she and Darnell did on AMC. But I guess I see huge potential for her character to come into her own as we say. Hopefully they get it right with her and Darnell.
SN: it would be cool to see DW in a businessman role opposite EB. IJS |

BUT,did you see an episode,last week,when DM's charact-
er,Harmony(or Yoharmony,as some viewers call her.  )
referred to Phyllis Newman(Michelle Stafford)as "MISS"
Phyllis?! It would be HALF-way understandable if
Harmony was from the south and said that. Or if Harmony
was,considerably,younger than Phyllis,like Anna.(Whose
"Miss" references also made me sick. Thankfully,I
barely,watched the show,then. Much like now.)
But,given that Harmony and Phyllis are close to the same
age and Harmony is not a southerner(where Miss this and
Miss that,would be understandable.)it begs the ques-
tion,WTHECK were the writers(or even DM,if she was ad-lib-
bing.)THINKING?!
Suffice it to say,message boards are LIT UP,over this
"Miss Phyllis" crap! And I have to admit,I'm okay
with it. Because most people are NOT HAPPY about it
and are voicing their displeasure,loud and clear.
Some people,not surprisingly,think that writers like
Jamey Giddens,over at DC,are blowing the phrase(Miss
Phyllis)out of proportion,and making it much ado about
nothing. But,most others,see it as just ANOTHER
example of Maria Arena Bell's racial insensitivity(to put it mildly.)to
Y&R's,considerable,AA audience. I tend to agree.
But,in all fairness,Y&R is not exempt in being disre-
pectful or racist,where characters of color,or AAs are
concerned. I WAS looking forward to DW coming
to GC. But,now,I don't know.
What do you guys think? Is MAB and Co,being insensi-
tive AGAIN? OR did DM ad-lib or just flat-out "flub"
her lines? Me? I'm not sure. |

| Darnell & Debbie on Y&R | January 8, 2012 @ 9:10pm | It's ok to have healthy fantasies. Here's hoping the Y&R writers wakeup and at some point in the future let Debbie and Darnell's characters unite once again.
Before you totally write off the idea, Y&R execs might wise up to the idea of integrating certain AMC "institutions" such as Ange & Jesse into their storylines. Who can stop them? Change the names, yes, keep the romance. Would serve ABC for dropping one of the best soaps. In fact, I proposed to a friend that Y&R purchase the AMC rights and merge the main characters into the show, and lengthen the show to 90 minutes. Even if the don't purchase the rights, perhaps they would have the temerity to hire most of the major players (Tad, David, Erica, and yes the flat chested huzzies Greenlee and Kendall). WOuld be a definite blast.
Hey nation, let's bombard the Y&R execs with requests for a reunion to our beloved couple. |

| BACKFLIPS | January 4, 2012 @ 10:32pm | Glad DW is working again! I do not think they will place those two in each other's orbit romantically either. It would be interesting to see them be romantically linked to other people, since this is Y&R and not AMC. If they really write for them and develop characters it could be awesome.
I personally like Yolanda's (Harmony's)character. She gives a splash of you better back up. She is flawed and very real and raw but in a good way I think. Mainly love that her chacracter has potential to grow and change and that fans can see her grow from her lowest point. No place to go but up (at least for 5 minutes it is a soap opera! LOL) |
